DETAILS ABOUT PARROTFISH
Welcome to the miracle of the Parrotfish. I’m still in shock that there are 95 different types of this fish. These fish are SUPER important to the coral reefs. Did you miss Sunday’s episode? Click here to check it out.
These fish are all “sequential hermaphrodites” which means they are all born female. Parrotfish live in what are called “harems” which is basically several females and a single male, who aggressively defends the harem from any challenge (or challenger). This guy is called the “supermale” of the group. If he dies, or (wait for it) if the largest female becomes big enough to take him on, the largest female in the group changes sex to challenges him. The formerly female parrotfish wins and he is OUT. Her coloration and reproductive organs and everything literally changes, and she is now the supermale. WOW Amazing.
See you SUMday for a very exciting topic. Nope zero previews. You are going to love it.
